MaximsNewsNetwork: 26 November 2009 - UNMIS - The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) organizes and mobilizes over 16000 volunteers to clean up garbage in Juba following reports of cholera and diarrheal diseases because of poor sanitation in the town. Just five years after signing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, towns in Southern Sudan, including the regional capital Juba, are experiencing a problem all too common to the rest of the region - garbage. Garbage is becoming a real threat in Juba town, plastic and rubbish can be seen in ever corner. With the growth of the town and poor waste management systems, illnesses such as cholera, malaria and various waterborne diseases are one of the biggest threats to the town population. Siam Lado runs a tea room in customs market, one of the busiest markets in Juba. Like in most of the areas, her tea room is surrounded by pile of garbage and she is finding it difficult to attract more customers because of the garbage dump. Walking or driving in Juba, one wont fail to notice heaps of garbage littering the landscape. It is difficult to quantify the health and environmental damage being done. Plastic bottles, carrier bags, soft drink cans are just dumped by individuals. Yanga Partic, a trader expresses his fear for his health. People seem to have given up and care less of the health hazard such heaps of garbage may pose.
